Happy 106th Birthday Virginia Eyeler

September 13, 2017

The oldest member of Wesley Monumental UMC, Virginia Eyler, celebrated her 106th birthday today. Born in 1911, it is difficult for me to comprehend the changes she has seen in our world or crises she has been affected by during her lifetime. However, Solomon once wrote, “What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9) Unlike Solomon who talks about how wearisome this all is to him, Virginia stills exhibits the joy of the Lord each day and meets it with the words of the Psalmist, “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. In spite of an aging, failing body, grief and loss that goes with outliving almost everyone you knew and loved, her Spirit is unshakable. I am sure she knows that in spite of all the changes and the uncertainly of the future that God is faithful and the one unchangeable, unmovable, source of peace and hope in life. Every time I see her my mind hears the words of Isaac Watts’ great hymn, “O God our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast and our eternal home!” Thank you Virginia Eyler for your witness to me that God’s grace is sufficient, God’s love unfailing, and God’s hope unshakable. Happy 106th birthday, “May you be forever young.”
