When Jesus taught the “great command” of “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and to love your neighbor as you love yourself”, someone asked him then who is my neighbor? At Wesley Monumental we have been part of this neighborhood for almost 150 years. One of our neighbors has been the Massie School. This year Massie May Day will be celebrated in Calhoun Square on May 3rd and hundreds of school children from our community will be in our neighborhood. We will be serving drinks and cookies to the children and teachers that day from 10:00 until 12:00 noon. Thank you to the many people who have volunteered to bring 180 dozen cookies for us to share.
We also are grateful for the neighbors who share this downtown area and next Wednesday evening for our Wednesday night dinner we are having a “Block Party” cookout and inviting our neighbors to come and have dinner with us. We hope you will join us in welcoming our neighbors to Wesley Monumental UMC where we are reaching out to “love our neighbors as we love ourselves.”
Hospitality is one of the ways we witness to the welcoming love of Christ. How we make people feel when they visit our church for worship, fellowship, Eli’s Place, etc, is critical to our witness. Pay attention to who you don’t know and introduce yourself. Wear your name tag and learn the names of new people. Invite your neighbors and co-workers to visit us at Wesley where we are confident they will experience the welcoming love of Christ through us.
