As Christians, we take time very seriously. Time is not simply the passage of one moment to the next, but is marked by God’s gracious work in our lives and world. Because of this, the church observes its own calendar that connects our worshipping life here and now with what God has done, is doing, and will do in history. This calendar is built around the two events most important to us: Jesus’ birth, and his death and Resurrection. The holy days of Christmas and Easter that mark these events evoke our most intense and beautiful worship. Similarly, we celebrate God’s action in our individual lives at major moments of transition: our initiation into the church, marriage, and death. Every moment of our lives takes place within the enfolding grace and love of God, but our awareness of that grace and love becomes particularly acute at these times. These “special occasions” are more than just an opportunity to gather and celebrate with family and friends. They are opportunities for worship as we reflect on God’s goodness and love toward us!
