The funeral is not a biographical remembrance of the deceased. It is an opportunity for worship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the context of death as well as a remembering of the one who has died. United Methodists believe in “the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.” Pastors are available to discuss funeral plans and arrangements whether or not one is a church member. Call the church office as soon as practical and do not schedule a funeral without first consulting the pastor and church musician, especially if contemplating use of the sanctuary. Pastors will preside at funerals in the sanctuary, at a funeral home or cemetery, or at other mutually agreed upon locations. United Methodists affirm the practices of burial and cremation. United Methodists use the “Service of Death and Resurrection” in our United Methodist Hymnal, employing appropriate Scripture, prayers and a eulogy/homily. Appropriate music (instrumental, soloist and/or congregational hymns) can be an important part of a service. All details of the service will be carefully planned by the pastor, director of music (if applicable), and family. |
