Age-appropriate Sunday morning classes are provided for all children at Wesley. Toddlers receive nurturing care in the nursery and participate in “Toddler Time” – short Bible stories and Christian play. Classes for children age three through sixth grade meet from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Godly PlayGodly Play is a Montessori-based approach to participating in the stories of the faith and experiencing the presence of God. Godly Play assumes that children have some experience of the mystery of the presence of God in their lives, but lack the language, permission, and understanding to express and enjoy that spiritual experience within our secular culture. When children arrive at the class, they are greeted by a doorperson who will ask them “if they are ready to enter.” The child then joins a circle where the storyteller will help them enter the faith story for the day. Following a time of wondering about the story, the children are invited to choose their work for the morning. The work of a child is play – which involves deep involvement and concentration. Each child will then work with the story through art materials or retell it with the story materials themselves.
ROCK SOLID Children in 6th grade use Rock Solid material, which provides a fun and biblically sound curriculum. Children are nurtured and faith is built as a variety of learning styles are employed, faithful role models are provided, and opportunities to articulate faith are offered. A complete overview of the Bible is given in three years.
All teachers, leaders, and workers with children are in compliance with Wesley’s Child Protection Policy. |
