The primary responsibility of our young choristers is to offer praise to God through song in worship. Choristers learn that they each have a responsibility to lead worship through music. Wesley UMC has three choirs divided by ages which allow children an opportunity to learn how to offer their best praise. Choirs are open to children in the church a well as in the community. The Children's Music Ministry is held on Wednesday evenings, spring and fall (on the nights we have Wednesday Night Supper), from 6:00 - 7:00 P. M. JOYFUL NOISE (Ages 3 [9/30/11] and 4). Room 201. Charli Weeks and Alysa Smith. Recognizing that children develop their musical talents at an early age, this new group will explore the beginnings of the singing voice, recognizing and repeating simple rhythms, movement (both individual and group), as well as playing rhythm instruments and tone chimes. The children use the Stepping Stones Music Curriculum. NOVICE CHORISTERS (Kindergarten—Grade 1) Our youngest choristers will learn simple hymns, spiritual songs and anthems to be presented in worship throughout the school year. Sometimes they will sing in worship with the Junior Choristers. JUNIOR CHORISTERS (Grades 2—6) Our junior choristers will learn advanced hymns, spiritual songs and anthems to be presented in worship throughout the school year. The Novice and Junior Choristers adhere to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Voice for Life Curriculum. Voice for Life is an acclaimed structured choral training guide that provides a framework for choral singers to develop their vocal skills, musical understanding, and knowledge of the repertoire. The curriculum operates on a medal/ribbon based system with five levels: white, light blue, dark blue, red, gold. Sir Sydney Nicholson, organist of Westminster Abbey, founded RSCM in 1927 and the organization consisted of a training college for church musicians and an association of affiliated churches committed to attaining high standards of musical performance. Today, more than 11,000 churches nationwide are RSCM affiliates. ORFF INSTRUMENTS, TONE CHIMES and MORE! (Kindergarten—Grade 6) Alternating with our singing choirs, the children will continue their training on instruments, and will occasionally accompany themselves as they sing in worship.
