Did you know that today begins National Unplugging Day? It runs from sunset March 4th to sunset March 5th. The nonprofit organization Reboot is touting this effort by asking people to unplug computers, iphones, televisions, all electronic devices. The goal is to challenge people to slow down, reclaim time and reconnect with friends, family, community and self. This group is urging people to replace their technology for twenty four hours by getting outside, avoiding commerce, finding silence, talking or playing with friends. The key principle, at least for this one day, is to avoid technology. The ideas they are advocating sound like a good idea, sort of an electronic-free Sabbath. There is nothing wrong with today’s technology, of course, unless it is dominating your life. If you are eating, sleeping and vacationing with your notebook or droid, you need to unplug. I’d write more, but I’m “in training” for my upcoming twenty four hours of unplugged life. I’ll see you Sunday, on God’s Sabbath. I’ll be interested in hearing your stories of how it felt to be unplugged for a day. Creede Hinshaw |
