Have you ever visited Callaway Gardens in Harris County, Georgia? That tranquil and beautiful nature preserve was one of the joys for the Hinshaw family during the years we lived in Harris and Muscogee Counties. We shared many happy days around the lakes, beaches, foot paths and bicycle trails of those gently rolling hills. On this particular visit I was standing outside the Sibley Horticulture Center when I noticed an elderly man with a flowing white beard, camera in hand. Lots of people bring their cameras to Callaway Gardens; I was regretting that I had forgotten mine on that particular autumn day. But this gentleman attracted my attention because of the subject matter of his photograph. He was bent over a park bench and I thought at first perhaps he was photographing some exotic bug or perhaps a group of autumn leaves. But studying the situation I chuckled to myself when I saw that the subject of his photo was a baby…presumably his grandchild…and this baby was lying on the bench having a diaper change! Isn’t that the way life is? All around us God has placed this incredibly beautiful world. (It seems like half the people in Savannah carry a camera around the neck). No matter where one travels there is beauty to admire. And yet, in the midst of the breathtaking beauty of the natural world, a human baby, even in a somewhat indelicate pose, trumps the beauty of the rocks and rills. How long has it been since you’ve told your children or grandchildren how beautiful or handsome they are? How long has it been since you have affirmed those who are the closest to you? You say you did so just five minutes ago? Congratulations! If it’s been any longer than that, why not express your appreciation for those you love. Do it today! Three…two…one…Cheese! P.S. I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday. Our worship attendance has been excellent this year! Oh, yes…we are only 2 weeks away from Ribbon Cutting and Dedication of our new office complex…Feb 7th…details to follow!
