Okay, I’ll admit that the response raised my hackles a bit. I couldn’t help it.When I invited two people to church this week, telling them that Wesley Monumental is located on beautiful Calhoun Square, one of the invitees remarked with a mixture of amazement and disbelief, “All the way downtown???” Yes, that’s the phrase that set me off…those four seemingly harmless and innocuous words”all the way downtown.” For crying out loud, where does this person live, anyway, Jacksonville or Atlanta or maybe Charlotte? How far, I wonder, does this person commute to work? Is this incredulous person a parent who drives a child to piano lessons or a soccer match more than 10 minutes from the house or even drives 30 minutes round trip to dine at a favorite restaurant? All the way downtown! It was almost as if we were talking about a commute across 7 time zones or even to the third moon of Saturn. Is it possible the person who marveled at this stupefying distance also drives to every home and away football game of the old alma mater? All the way downtown! I can’t imagine a finer Sunday morning destination than beautiful downtown Savannah. Some of you walk to church and others ride your bikes. Some of you drive less ten minutes. But a good number of you drive “all the way downtown” and are glad you do so. You know when you arrive you will be inspired by great music, sing stirring songs of faith, be stimulated by a Sunday School lesson, be greeted by loving friends and even enjoy hearty fair trade coffee at the Wayne Street Cabana. Some of you make the drive because your children and youth insist on it. An increasing number of you understand that a drive “all the way downtown” to worship the Living God is the most important trip you will make every single week. Fellow commuters in Christ, I’ll see you Sunday, on Calhoun Square. What a great place to worship! Creede Hinshaw |
