It’s Friday afternoon! The weekend promises pleasant weather, holding out the potential for a wonderful couple of days. I am excited about a clear calendar for Saturday, a pot of bold coffee, some fruitful sermon work and a surprise to the day here and there. While musing about the weekend I began to invent a brief questionnaire – nine questions designed to help you think about yourself. I couldn’t quite come up with ten, but so what? Maybe you can come up with the tenth one yourself. So go ahead; give it a quick try.
As you have noticed, I wrote these questions in their bleakest possible form. They’re overstated. I did it on purpose, because sometimes when we are in a dark mood, that’s the way we look at life. But my own sense of things is that life is rarely as bad as it seems at any given moment. There is always something in the life of faith that can bring us joy or hope. As Paul expresses it, we look not to the seen, but to the unseen. If you answered a preponderance of these questions “True,” please contact one of your pastors. But, if finding that even in terrible straits you are able to answer most of these questions “False,” give thanks to God for the ability to see your way through to a life that is victorious. Here’s one thing I am anticipating: January has 5 Sundays! I get to see you more often than usual this month. Creede Hinshaw |
